Should We Apologize To Sodom And Gomorrah?

When we compare the wicked behavior of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, which precipitated such an action by the Almighty, to the sins of the modern world, not only in our country but particularly in our country, we find ourselves apologizing to Sodom and Gomorrah! For this generation, with its wholesale perversion and legalized immorality running rampant throughout our society, has plummeted far lower than that of Sodom and Gomorrah! And then as the punishment befits the crime, we can at the least, expect that which God meted out on the evil men and women of these cities.
What has become legal and is now the law of our land, not too long ago was against the law and punishable by prison up to twenty years ago. When we consider the legalization of Abortion, Homosexual actions, same-sex marriages, Euthanasia, assisted suicide, sterilization, cloning, choosing who has the right to live – refusing life support and/or imposing death on those whose quality of life is judged below the standards prescribed by insurance statistics, approving or disapproving operations and transplants based on age, and on and on, it makes Sodom and Gomorrah seem like a high school prom which got out of hand.
When has the Culture of Death equaled that of the last days of the Twentieth Century and the beginning of the Third Millenium? We seem to be on a course of outdoing every decadent society before us, striving to top the perversions of Sodom and Gomorrah and go beyond those of the Roman and Greek civilizations. Homosexuality and sexual permissiveness ran unrestrained, completely out of control in the Greek and then in the Roman empires. In every society gone mad, the citizens drunk with the elixir of the pagan gods of permissiveness, promiscuity, depravity, and human sacrifice, those civilizations perished! Did they have a government helping to finance and police forces (who justify their actions by saying they are just following orders, like the Nazis at the Nuremberg trials) enforcing depravity? In any event, we do and we all know what happened to those civilizations, and so, unless we can change men’s hearts, what can we expect for our civilization?
In those times, there were not organized women’s groups (financed by our tax dollars) dedicated to the murder of unborn children, under the banner of woman’s choice over her body and the woman’s right to freedom from the heels of a male-dominated society. Even during the great movement of women to be freed from the oppression of men’s laws, the foundress of that outstanding Woman’s movement in this country, Susan B. Anthony, maintained that the murder of a pre-born child was a deplorable crime. She stated, “I deplore the horrible crime of child-murder (referring to abortion), no matter what the motive, love of ease, or a desire to save from suffering the unborn innocent. The woman is awfully guilty who commits the deed (abortion).” The feminists of her day considered abortion acts of “desperate savageness” and “the slaughter of the innocents.” (Information courtesy of CRNET, Mannassas, VA 1994)
Susan B. Anthony, foundress and spearhead of the feminist movement in the United States, would most likely be drummed out by the current gurus of the movement. It would not be convenient for them to support their mother-in-faith.
Maybe the Renaissance period, the great rebirth of art and culture, and the downfall of spirituality and morals, which was famous for its secular humanism, its debauchery, its attempt to recreate the orgiastic flavor of the Roman Empire at its worst, comes close in sinfulness and wickedness to this, the first decade of the Third Millenium. Renaissance was broken up into two philosophies, Secular Humanism and Christian Humanism. Whereas one philosophy’s intention was to explore the beauty of the languages, the sculptors, the artists, the philosophers, in an effort to glorify God through the advancements of His creation, another stronger philosophy’s focus was to delve into the subculture, the perversion of ancient Rome and Greece, with its open sex, permissiveness, radical homosexual activity, materialism, self gratification and personal advancement, a philosophy of, if it pleases you, go for it! We may have said it before, but just looking at what began in mid-Fourteenth Century Italy, and then spread over all of Europe, the parallels are frightening with what’s going on today. But again, we seriously doubt that at their very worst, they equaled the wickedness of these (last?) days.
We’ve seen it coming for years. In the last ten years or so, as we have traveled around the country giving talks at Marian and Eucharistic Conferences, Days of Recollection and Parish Missions, we have cried out passionately, “We have to apologize to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Our behavior makes them look like choir boys and girls.” Since the scandal of Abortion came upon the scene in 1973, and the subsequent legalization of the ghoulish practice of taking body parts from aborted babies, which are then used for experimentation and ingredients in the manufacture of skin creams for aging men and women, for human growth hormones to make old men feel younger, all for fun and profit, we’ve had to take another look at our attitudes towards the Nazi butchers and their atrocities at Auschwitz.
We went to Auschwitz and Birkenau to videotape documentaries on man’s inhumanity to man as displayed in the vile genocide of Edith Stein and St. Maxmilian Kolbe. We taped one segment outside the death cell of St. Maxmilian Kolbe, where prisoners were taken by the Nazis, lined up against a wall and shot after first having all their clothes removed so that they could be used for other prisoners in a cost-cutting effort to maintain economy in the camp. We noticed that all the windows in the building across from St. Maxmilian Kolbe’s death cell were boarded up. None of the other buildings in Auschwitz were boarded up. So we asked our guide what had gone on in that building. We were told that was where experimentation was done on pregnant women and aborted children. Genetic study began in that condemned building. But how has history judged them and how will history judge us? In the light of the legalized murder of over a billion unborn children worldwide through Abortion, will our generation be found guilty of massive genocide, or will they say that the butchers at Auschwitz were perhaps just slightly ahead of their time?
